Today’s learners live in a technology and media rich age. In support of the SAU50 commitment to educating the whole child as well the Rye School District’s (RSD) commitment to providing equitable access to a 21st century education to all learners in our District, a significant investment has been made in technology at Rye Elementary School and Rye Junior High School.
Rye School District Devices
The RSD provides every student, teacher, support staff member, and administrator with the technology they need to be an effective member of our learning community. A diverse device set is recommended and available to our learning community to ensure that the right device is available and functional to meet the requirements of the task, environment, and learner skill set.
The following platforms are used daily by our learning community
As of the 2017-2018 school year, every students at Rye Elementary School (RES) in grades 2 through 5 is assigned a Chromebook that will be used as a primary device. Students use the Chromebooks and related Google Suite for Education accounts, websites, subscriptions and application tools during the day to support personalized learning and demonstration of competencies. In Kindergarten and grade 1, our learners primary devices are iPads.
Upon entry into Rye Junior High (RJH) School, every student is assigned a new Chromebook to be used for the duration of their Rye academic career. The Chromebooks and related Google Suite for Education accounts, websites, subscriptions and and application tools are used in every class to demonstrate competencies and support learning. Starting in the 2017-2018, RJH students will have the option of bringing their Chromebook out of the Rye School District buildings to continue access to learning tools anywhere, anyplace. For more information on this, see the RJH Chromebooks tab on this website.
Google Suite for Education
The “glue” that binds this diverse set of technology is Google Suite for Education (GSuite). GSuite provides members of the RSD learning community with web based (cloud) productivity and collaboration tools that enable our learners to work, learn, and share from any location, on any device, at any time. GSuite is a Google offering that is distinct from Google apps for consumers. GSuite provides security, administrative, and archival controls specifically designed for use in an educational environment. GSuite is used successfully by over 40 million students, teachers, and administrators world wide.
A GSuite account is created for every RSD student (Grade 1 through grade 8), teacher, and staff member to be used for school related work. This account is considered the learner’s official Rye School District GAFE account until such time that the learner is no longer enrolled in the Rye School District. Although managed by the RSD, the GSuite accounts and created materials are housed on Google servers, thereby giving our learners access to Google web based applications (e.g., word processor, spreadsheet, and presentation, drawing, forms, calendar, website authoring tools, and mail) when and where they are needed, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on any device which can connect to the Internet. The applications enabled for students are based on grade level and coursework requirements. The Google email application will be enabled for student accounts based on coursework requirements. The Rye School District institutes a “walled garden”, where students will not have the ability to send mail outside of the school domain (ryesd.org) nor will they be able to receive email from outside of the ryesd.org domain.
